Can You Hear Us Now? A Wireless Giant Nears 15 Years with Nexus
Fifteen Years of Full Bars
“When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain.”
– Nikola Tesla, 1926
Nikola Tesla dreamed of wireless long before anyone carried a phone. In 1901, he began building Wardenclyffe Tower on Long Island to send signals through the air. He was decades ahead of his time, and he never stopped believing the world would one day be connected.
One of America’s largest wireless carriers, the one that spent years asking “Can you hear me now?”, made that dream its business. It also made a call in 2012 that it never hung up on: Nexus Query Chameleon. Next year marks 15 years together, and in all that time, Nexus has never dropped a call.
Teradata, Oracle, and BigQuery in One Tool
“Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground.”
– Theodore Roosevelt, 1904
Theodore Roosevelt became the youngest president in American history at 42. He was a dreamer who still believed in getting the work done.
This carrier lives the same way. Its feet are on the ground with Teradata and Oracle, and its eyes are on the cloud with Google BigQuery. Nexus queries all three from one tool, opening a tab for each system, and it can join the result sets together. The Cache Tree searches every system at once for a table or column name. Nexus keeps the stars and the ground on the same screen, with full bars on both.
Know the Bytes Before You Bite
“It’s easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission.”
– Grace Hopper
Rear Admiral Grace Hopper was a computing pioneer. In 1947, her team found a real moth stuck in the Harvard Mark II computer and taped it in the logbook, and “debugging” went down in history. She also handed out 11.8-inch pieces of wire to show how far light travels in a nanosecond.
In BigQuery, on-demand queries are billed by the bytes they process, so asking forgiveness can get expensive. Nexus shows how many bytes a BigQuery query will process before you run it. Trim the columns, add a WHERE clause, and watch the number drop. With Nexus, you get permission from the bytes before you have to ask the budget for forgiveness.
Migrate Between All Systems
“You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
– Eleanor Roosevelt, 1960
Eleanor Roosevelt was First Lady for 12 years, longer than anyone else, and later chaired the United Nations commission that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She never let “cannot” stand in her way.
Moving data from Teradata and Oracle to BigQuery sounds like something you cannot do. With Nexus, you check the tables, pick a target, and click Execute. Nexus builds the target tables, pairs the source vendor’s export utility with the target vendor’s load utility, and moves the data at full speed. Can you migrate now? Good.
The Nexus Server Serves Aces
“Pressure is a privilege.”
– Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King won 39 Grand Slam titles, and in 1973, she beat Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” in front of a television audience of about 90 million people. She knew how to handle a big moment.
When a migration runs from a desktop, every row squeezes through the user’s PC, and the pressure lands on one little machine. The Nexus Server takes the pressure off. It moves data straight from source to target while the PC only sends the instructions. It also speeds up federated queries and stores flat files cheaply so users can query them like tables. Every time it moves your data, the Nexus Server serves an ace.
Drag, Drop and Done
“Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs.”
– Henry Ford, 1922
In 1913, Henry Ford’s moving assembly line cut the time to build a Model T chassis from more than 12 hours to about an hour and a half. He did it by breaking one big job into many small ones.
Nexus does the same for moving data. Users love that they can take any result set, drag it onto any system in the tree, and drop it. Nexus creates the table and moves the data with high-speed utilities. One drag, and the assembly line runs itself. Any color you want, as long as it’s a table.
Super Join Builder: Federation Across All Systems
“The most important measure of how good a game I played was how much better I’d made my teammates play.”
– Bill Russell, 1979
Bill Russell won 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics, more than any player in history. He measured himself by how much better he made everyone around him.
The Super Join Builder plays the same way. It brings tables from Teradata, Oracle, BigQuery, and more into one query. Check the columns you want, and Nexus writes the SQL, moves the data to a hub, and joins it there. Pick a different hub, and Nexus rewrites the SQL. Every table plays better with Nexus on the floor, and that’s a championship ring for every join.
Cloud Drop
“It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.”
– Sir Edmund Hillary
In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest. At more than 29,000 feet, they stood above the clouds.
Cloud Drop takes your data to the same heights. Drag any query result into AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, or local storage, and it lands as a CSV, JSON, Parquet, Excel, or text file. Nexus shows cloud buckets like databases and files like tables, so users can query a file in Google Cloud Storage and join it to BigQuery. No oxygen tanks required, and the signal is strong at every altitude.
GitHub Integration
“I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
– Michael Jordan, 1997
Michael Jordan won six NBA championships and was named Finals MVP every time. In a famous Nike commercial, he reminded everyone how many shots he had missed along the way.
Great SQL is built the same way: draft after draft. Push, pull, and manage SQL files directly between Nexus and GitHub, and every version is saved, including the misses. Click a .sql file in the repo, and it opens as a query, ready to run on any system. Every version is on the record, and every query has a shot at the Hall of Fame.
Federated Notebooks
“Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”
– Steve Jobs, 2005
Steve Jobs co-founded Apple in a garage in 1976 and introduced the iPhone in 2007, putting the internet in everyone’s pocket. He closed his famous Stanford speech with these words.
Federated Notebooks are for analysts who stay hungry for answers. Mix SQL, Python, Markdown, and more in one connected workflow. One cell queries BigQuery, the next queries Oracle, and Python brings the results together. Oh, and one more thing: every step is documented, so the next analyst never has to start from scratch.
BIcandy: Instant Dashboards and Beautiful Maps
“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”
– Walt Disney
Walt Disney introduced Mickey Mouse in 1928 and opened Disneyland in 1955. He built a career on making the impossible look easy.
BIcandy does the same with your data. Run a query that returns a date and an amount, and Nexus builds the dashboard for you: totals by year, month, weekday, and hour, plus maps where the size of each circle shows the amount in each city. There’s no dragging, no dropping, and no separate BI tool. It’s the happiest dashboard on Earth.
More Than 100 Themes
“Creativity takes courage.”
– Henri Matisse
Late in life, when he could no longer stand at an easel, Henri Matisse picked up scissors and created his famous cut-paper works, including The Snail in 1953.
Nexus lets every user cut their own colors too. Choose from more than 100 themes, from Coffee and Northern Lights to Pittsburgh Black and Gold. Nexus is also the only query tool that lets you schedule your themes: change them by the clock, rotate through your favorites, or go light by day and dark at night. It’s a masterpiece cut to fit every user.
Why Nexus Never Drops the Call
“Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.”
– Jim Valvano, 1993
Jim Valvano coached North Carolina State to one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history, the 1983 NCAA championship. Ten years later, he gave one of the most inspiring speeches ever at the first ESPY Awards.
Most vendor query tools give up at the edge of their own system: Snowsight on Snowflake, BigQuery Studio on BigQuery, and the Databricks SQL Editor on Databricks. Nexus never gives up on a system. It works equally well on Teradata, Oracle, BigQuery, and every other system it connects to. Microsoft OEM’d Nexus from 2009 to 2012 and gave it to its customers, and one of America’s largest wireless carriers has stayed connected since 2012. Some partnerships drop out. This one keeps getting stronger, one bar at a time.
Make the Call
“The most effective way to do it, is to do it.”
– Amelia Earhart
In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She didn’t wait for perfect conditions. She just went.
So make the call. Ask for a 30-minute demo, and we’ll run Nexus on your own systems with the queries your team runs every day. If you’d rather try it yourself, ask for a free trial. Can you hear us now? Good.
